Amazon is preparing for another round of major job cuts, with reports suggesting that 16,000 corporate roles could be eliminated globally this week, and India may face significant impact.
The Seattle-based tech giant’s India offices, particularly in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, are expected to see thousands of employees affected. This move follows the October 2025 layoffs, when around 14,000 employees were let go, including 800–1,000 in India. Reports from unnamed sources indicate that the latest reductions span Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, Prime Video, devices, and People Experience and Technology (human resources) divisions, though the full scope is yet unclear.
Multiple discussions online suggest that white-collar roles across India will be impacted, with Chennai, which handles much of Amazon’s operations, likely bearing the brunt. Bengaluru and Hyderabad, the company’s key tech hubs, are also expected to face layoffs.
While Amazon has not provided an official reason, sources indicate the company is aiming to streamline bureaucracy built up during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increased adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation is said to have rendered several roles surplus to requirements.
Last year, reports highlighted that Amazon intends to reduce reliance on hiring new warehouse workers in the US, planning to automate many roles using AI-powered robots by 2033. If fully executed, these initiatives could prevent the hiring of as many as 600,000 workers over the decade.
The upcoming layoffs appear to be part of Amazon’s broader plan to trim a total of 30,000 corporate roles by mid-2026, with the October 2025 and current cuts contributing toward that target. Company plans may still evolve, and details are expected once the official announcement is made.
