Huawei leads global 5G standard patent rankings, overtakes key rivals

A fresh industry assessment has reshaped the competitive landscape of 5G innovation, placing Huawei at the top of the global rankings for 5G standard essential patents.

According to a new report released by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), Huawei has secured the 1st position worldwide, moving ahead of major technology players such as Qualcomm, LG, Nokia, and Ericsson.

ETSI is an independent organization responsible for developing globally applicable standards for ICT products. It plays a key role in ensuring interoperability and supporting innovation across areas such as 4G, 5G, mobile devices, broadcasting, and cybersecurity. The institute is widely recognized by the European Union.

In its latest disclosure of top companies holding global 5G standard patents, Huawei emerged as the clear leader. The company holds a total of 11314 patents, including Chinese and global filings. These patents cover a wide range of technologies, including smartphones, smart cars, smartwatches, and related innovations. Strong research focus and sustained R&D investments have helped the company maintain its lead in the patent race.

Qualcomm ranked 2nd with 8448 patents, while LG secured the 3rd position with 7442 patent applications. The top 5 companies in the ranking are Huawei, Qualcomm, LG, Nokia, and Ericsson.

A closer look at the rankings shows a strong presence of Chinese companies in the global patent landscape. Firms such as Huawei and Xiaomi continue to push advanced technologies, strengthening both corporate growth and national performance in the global patent ecosystem.
