Adobe rolls out AI-powered upgrades for Premiere Pro and After Effects ahead of Sundance

Adobe has announced a major set of product updates ahead of the Sundance Film Festival, introducing new integrations and tools across Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Firefly. The San Jose, California-based software company confirmed that Premiere Pro is now being integrated with its Firefly platform, bringing a wide range of artificial intelligence capabilities directly into the video editing workflow.

In a press release, Adobe said the updates are designed to simplify and streamline post-production for creators and professionals. The new features will roll out this week as part of the 26.0 update. The announcement comes just before the Sundance Film Festival begins on January 22. Citing the annual Sundance Institute survey, Adobe said 85% of entrants this year used Creative Cloud applications to create and edit their films.

“We’re thrilled to see so many filmmakers creating their stories with Adobe’s industry-leading tools,” said Deepa Subramaniam, vice president of product marketing, creative professionals at Adobe. “The creative community inspires everything we do, and we’re committed to advancing AI video tools with new innovations and investments for the next generation of storytellers.”

The most significant update is to Premiere Pro. The app can now connect with the Adobe Firefly platform, giving users access to AI models from Adobe, Google, OpenAI, Runway, and others. This allows professionals to use AI tools for design, imaging, video, audio, and motion creation within Premiere Pro, without switching between apps. Adobe said this integration will make post-production faster and more seamless.

Alongside AI features, Adobe is improving core editing tools. Object Selection and Mask tools in Premiere Pro and After Effects are now more intuitive, helping users track complex subjects more easily. Redesigned Ellipse, Rectangle, and Pen masks offer greater precision and creative control.

Firefly Boards is also being integrated into both platforms, enabling smoother transitions from idea planning to final execution through shared assets. Firefly Boards is an AI-powered collaborative planning tool. In addition, Adobe Stock is now built into Premiere Pro, allowing users to browse, preview, and import over 52 million clips directly from within the app.

After Effects is receiving several exclusive upgrades. These include enhanced 3D Parametric Meshes with spot and parallel shadows, over 1,300 free Substance 3D materials, improved Text Animator controls, and a new option to import SVG files as native shape layers with editable gradients and transparency.
