West Bengal is set to see major growth in its technology sector as the states flagship Silicon Valley project moves ahead at a fast pace and attracts large scale investment. The states IT Secretary, Shubhanjan Das, said the project has already lined up investments worth around ₹30,000 crore, with a clear focus on artificial intelligence, data centres and global capability centres.
The 250 acre Silicon Valley project is progressing at what Das described as a “fantastic pace”. Speaking at an industry event, he said physical inspections show that construction is advancing quickly across the designated areas. He added that the project is a key part of the states long term digital strategy and aims to position West Bengal as a leading technology hub in eastern India.
The states IT presence has expanded beyond Kolkata to cities such as Siliguri and Durgapur. This wider network now supports a growing technology ecosystem across the region.
West Bengal has also made steady progress in data centre capacity. It currently ranks sixth in the country and operates 11 private data centres. The state run data centre in Siliguri is equipped with advanced systems, including 40 H100 Nvidia GPU chips and around 40 L100 chips. The government is finalising a plan to allow private companies to use this infrastructure for AI training and model development, which could boost innovation and collaboration.
Software exports from the state have shown strong growth over the past 15 years. They have risen from about ₹8,000 crore to over ₹40,000 crore, reflecting the sectors expanding global reach.
At the same industry event, leading software exporters were recognised across several categories. Tata Consultancy Services received the IT Ratna award for recording the highest software exports from the state. The company employs around 54,000 to 55,000 people in West Bengal.
Sushil Mohta, chairman of World Trade Center Salt Lake, said the state is becoming a preferred location for global capability centres due to its strong academic base, skilled workforce and improving infrastructure. The IT department has also committed to acting as a single window facilitator to speed up approvals and support faster execution of expansion plans.
