X and AI chatbot Grok face major global outage affecting thousands of users

Elon Musk-owned microblogging platform X experienced a major outage on Friday evening, disrupting access for thousands of users worldwide, including in India. The issue also impacted Grok, the platform’s built-in artificial intelligence chatbot.

Data from outage tracking website Downdetector showed a sharp rise in complaints starting around 8.40 pm IST. Users in key Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru reported problems with refreshing their feeds and posting updates, according to a news agency report.

During the disruption, the X website displayed the message, “Something went wrong, but don’t fret — it’s not your fault.” On the mobile app, users saw an error stating, “Cannot retrieve posts at this time. Please try again later.” Many users also reported that Grok was either unresponsive or failed to load.

The outage was not limited to India. Downdetector recorded more than 41,000 reports from the United States by 9 pm IST. In the United Kingdom, close to 8,000 incidents were logged, while India saw over 2,400 reports, according to figures cited in a global report.

Earlier this week, X had faced a similar service disruption that triggered over 28,300 reports in the US and more than 8,000 in the UK. The company has not released any official statement explaining the reason behind the latest outage.
