OpenAI acquires health tech startup Torch to expand ChatGPT’s wellness capabilities

In a move to deepen its focus on health and wellness, OpenAI has acquired health technology startup Torch, with the company’s 4-member team joining OpenAI to build new health-related features for ChatGPT.

Torch co-founder Ilya Abyzov said the team will now work to “build ChatGPT Health into the best AI tool in the world for health and wellness.” He noted that Torch’s core strength lies in aggregating personal medical data from multiple sources into a single, usable platform.

Torch’s technology is designed to bring together health data from hospitals, laboratories, wearables, and consumer health services. Describing the product, Abyzov said it functions as “a unified medical memory for AI, bringing every bit of data about you from hospitals, labs, wearables, and consumer testing companies into one place.”

According to Abyzov, feedback from early beta users showed that the platform helped individuals better understand their health conditions and make more informed decisions. The startup focused on simplifying fragmented medical data so users could gain clearer insights into their overall health.

Explaining the decision to join OpenAI, Abyzov said, “I can’t imagine a better next chapter than to now get to put our technology and ideas in the hands of the hundreds of millions of people who already use ChatGPT for health questions every week.”

He also stressed that privacy and safety were key factors behind the acquisition. “We wouldn’t have taken it on if we didn’t think that OpenAI cared as much as we do about privacy, safety, collaboration with physicians, and building something at an extremely high level of craft and consumer polish,” he said.

With this acquisition, OpenAI is expected to strengthen ChatGPT’s role as a trusted assistant for health and wellness queries, while integrating Torch’s experience in managing sensitive medical data. The move signals a broader push to make AI-driven health tools more accessible, while maintaining strong safeguards around user privacy and data protection.
