Google Home app update brings advanced automation controls for smart homes

Google is expanding how users manage their connected homes with a fresh update to the Google Home app, focusing on deeper and more flexible automation. The new tools are designed to make daily routines smoother by allowing users to link actions across devices, media, appliances, and security systems with greater precision.

The update introduces new starters, conditions, and actions that give users more control over when and how their smart devices respond. With these additions, users can automate media playback, manage appliances, and handle security tasks. They can now open or close smart blinds, pause, resume, or dock a robot vacuum, and automate light effects. Google has also confirmed that more automation features will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home, Nest, and Gemini for Home, announced on X that the app now supports 20 new starter conditions and actions. These updates allow users to create more detailed routines, such as dimming lights by 50% when the TV starts, getting alerts when the washer finishes, or arming the security system at a scheduled time. Users can also control robot vacuum docking and volume, making automation more practical and personalised.

According to the latest release notes, users can now control media playback and check the status of smart appliances like washers, dryers, and coffee machines, including whether they are running, paused, or showing an error. This status feature is not available for smart ovens, robot vacuums, or robot mops. Google is encouraging users to share feedback through the feedback button on the event detail page, where they can give a thumbs up or down, or report a missing familiar face directly from the Familiar Face banner.
