Wing plans major expansion of drone delivery service across Walmart stores

Marking another step toward large-scale commercial operations, Wing is expanding its on-demand drone delivery partnership with Walmart for the second time in less than a year. The Alphabet-owned company will extend its service to an additional 150 Walmart stores across the United States.

The rollout builds on Wing’s existing operations in the Dallas–Fort Worth and Atlanta regions and will take place through the rest of this year and into 2027. Heather Rivera, Wing’s Chief Business Officer, said the expansion reflects strong and growing customer demand for drone deliveries.

According to Rivera, Wing’s most active customers are using the service around 3 times a week. Commonly ordered items include everyday groceries such as eggs, ground beef, fresh tomatoes, avocados, limes, Lunchables, and snacks like Takis. Wing also delivers over-the-counter medicines and beverages, including hot coffee.

The announcement follows earlier plans shared in June 2025 to expand services to Houston, Orlando, Tampa, and Charlotte. Rivera confirmed that Wing will launch operations in Houston on January 15. Once the current expansion is completed, the company will operate from more than 270 Walmart stores nationwide, including locations in Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami. At that scale, the service is expected to reach about 10% of the US population.

Wing and Walmart first partnered in 2023 with a pilot programme at 2 stores in the Dallas metro area, covering around 60,000 homes. The service later expanded to 18 Walmart Supercenters in Dallas–Fort Worth and then moved into Atlanta. While Wing also has a partnership with DoorDash, Walmart remains its primary commercial partner.

Wing continues to upgrade its technology and operations. The company recently completed its first commercial flights using a larger drone capable of carrying payloads of up to 5 pounds. Rivera said the company’s strategy remains focused on co-locating its drone operations at Walmart sites and tightly integrating with store workflows.

Wing may also cluster store launches to scale faster, an approach it used previously in Atlanta. Rivera did not comment on profitability but said her role is focused on scaling the business. “And so that is what I’m here to do, and excited about,” she said, adding that “volume is definitely powering our flywheel.”
