Larian Studios has clarified its position on the use of generative artificial intelligence in game development, stating that it will not use GenAI tools to create concept art for its upcoming game Divinity. The announcement comes weeks after the studio faced criticism following comments by CEO and creative director Swen Vincke about experimenting with AI tools.
In a recent Reddit AMA focused on the studio’s next project, Vincke directly addressed concerns about AI use. He said, “So first off there is not going to be any GenAI art in Divinity.” He explained that earlier comments about using AI tools during concept exploration had caused confusion. To avoid any doubt, the studio has now decided to completely avoid generative AI during the concept art phase.
“We already said this does not mean the actual concept art is generated by AI but we understand it created confusion. So, to ensure there is no room for doubt, we have decided to refrain from using GenAI tools during concept art development,” he added.
The clarification follows backlash over an earlier interview in which Vincke had said the studio used AI tools to explore ideas, create placeholder text, and experiment with early concepts. He later stressed that Larian’s artists remain fully responsible for the actual artwork.
Vincke also shared that while generative AI will not be used for concept art, the studio is still exploring its use in other areas to improve development speed. “We think GenAI can help with this and so we are trying things out across departments,” he said. He added that faster iterations could help refine ideas and improve overall game quality.
He also noted that any AI generated assets used in the future would only come from models trained on data owned by the studio, with full consent from original creators.
Generative AI remains a sensitive topic in the gaming industry, with many developers debating its impact on creativity and jobs. Larian’s next title, Divinity, was announced at The Game Awards 2025 and is expected to be the studio’s largest project so far.
