The Coimbatore city cybercrime police on Sunday arrested ten people from Gujarat for cheating a city resident of more than ₹16 lakh through an RTO challan scam. The police also seized ₹3.5 lakh in cash, 311 debit and credit cards, ten mobile phones, a swiping machine and a cheque book from the accused.
The arrested persons have been identified as D Bhathliya Rajnibai, 37, H Vishwabai, 36, Radadiya Chavan, 34, D Kohil Vijay, 37, S Rathore Jithendrasingh, 26, T Mahendrasingh, 35, M Sovadiya Mirel, 22, R Kapil Rajubai, 36, M Sovadiya Meet, 25, and J Pal Chandan, 34.
According to the police, the accused targeted S Samuel, 71, a resident of Kavundampalayam, by sending him an APK file along with a message about a pending traffic violation. The message closely resembled official alerts sent by the traffic police. After he downloaded the file, he received a message stating that ₹16.47 lakh had been withdrawn from his fixed deposit account.
Samuel lodged a complaint with the city cybercrime police on August 12, 2025. Following an investigation, a special team led by cybercrime inspector Alaguraj traced the suspects to Surat. The team secured all ten accused and produced them before a local court there before bringing them to Coimbatore.
The accused were later produced before a judicial magistrate in the city and were remanded in custody on Sunday evening. Further investigation is under way to find out if more victims were targeted using the same method.
