iOS 26 adoption remains low months after launch, report says

Apple introduced the iOS 26 user interface with its new Liquid Glass design in June 2025 during its annual developer event. After several months of beta testing, the update was released worldwide in September, alongside the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17, which come with iOS 26 preinstalled. Despite this, the update has received mixed reactions due to legibility issues and various bugs. A new report now suggests that only a small share of users have moved to iOS 26.

According to data from a web analytics service, the adoption rate of iOS 26 is “Far Less” than earlier iOS versions at the same point after launch. While the data does not explain the exact reason, a technology publication speculates that the new Liquid Glass design may be a key factor behind the slow uptake.

The report says that nearly four months after its release in mid September, only about 15 percent of iPhone users had installed any version of iOS 26. In comparison, around 63 percent of users were on some version of iOS 18 by January 2025. In January 2024, about 54 percent of users were running iOS 17, while around 62 percent were on iOS 16 in January 2023.

It is also worth noting that the iPhone 17 series was launched with iOS 26, and only older models had the option to upgrade. The data does not clarify whether users of the iPhone 17 series were included in these numbers.

Soon after its release, many users complained online about readability problems linked to the transparent elements of the Liquid Glass design. In response, Apple introduced more customisation options in later updates.

In November 2025, the company rolled out the iOS 26.1 update, which allowed users to switch between “clear look” and tinted look. This feature helps increase the opacity of interface elements in apps and on the lock screen. A month later, Apple released iOS 26.2, adding more refinements, including an option to adjust the opacity of the lock screen clock widget.
