Samsung clarifies delay in Google Play system updates on Galaxy phones

For many Galaxy users, missing system updates have quietly become a point of confusion, especially as core Android features depend on them.

Samsung has explained why several of its Galaxy smartphones are running older versions of Google Play system updates and confirmed that a new update is planned for release in January 2026. The clarification comes after repeated user complaints about delayed updates, even on recent flagship devices.

In 2019, Google split Android updates into 2 parts to speed up feature delivery. One part includes regular system updates managed by phone makers, while the other consists of Google Play system updates. These updates power features such as Digital Wellbeing, Privacy Dashboard, and theft protection, and are separate from the Google Play Services app found on the Play Store.

Unlike standard system updates, Google Play system updates often need to be checked manually. Users can find them by navigating to Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates. However, many Samsung users report that no updates appear, even when their devices are months behind.

Over the past few months, complaints have surfaced across Galaxy models, including the latest Galaxy S25 lineup. Some users report their devices are still on the September update, while others remain on the July version, highlighting inconsistencies across devices.

Samsung has now confirmed that it has intentionally paused the rollout of Google Play system updates. In a statement shared with a technology publication, the company acknowledged the delay and said it is working toward releasing a newer update. While Samsung did not confirm the exact version, it stated that a fresh Google Play system update will be issued in January 2026.

This approach runs counter to Google’s original goal of separating updates to ensure faster delivery, as delays by manufacturers can still slow down access to new features. The situation has also caused confusion among users, many of whom are unaware of how or where these updates are managed.

This is not the first time Samsung has faced criticism over such delays. In 2023, users experienced a similar pause that left Galaxy devices stuck on outdated Google Play system updates for months. Updates eventually resumed in early 2024.

With the January 2026 rollout now promised, users will be watching closely to see if Samsung maintains a more consistent update schedule going forward.
