OpenAI tests GPT-5.2 Codex-Max model for advanced coding tasks

A new development in AI-powered coding tools is beginning to surface among paid users.

OpenAI is testing a new Codex model called “GPT-5.2-Codex-Max”, which is now rolling out to some users with an active subscription. Several users have noticed the new model when asking Codex to identify the version it is running on.

The company had rolled out Codex powered by GPT-5.2 in December. At that time, there was no “Max” variant available to paid users. The appearance of GPT-5.2-Codex-Max suggests an expanded offering is now under evaluation.

When OpenAI announced GPT-5.2-Codex, it confirmed that the agentic tool could stay on track during long tasks, manage large code repositories through context compaction, and handle complex changes such as refactors and migrations without losing consistency.

OpenAI Codex 5.2 also showed improvements in tool usage reliability, stronger performance in Windows-based workflows, and enhanced vision capabilities. These upgrades allow the model to better understand screenshots, UI bugs, and diagrams shared during coding sessions.

Based on earlier releases, GPT-5.1-Codex-Max was positioned above standard versions and delivered notable performance gains. This pattern suggests that GPT-5.2-Codex-Max could offer another step forward.

OpenAI is expected to share more details about GPT-5.2-Codex-Max in the coming days.
