Foxconn plans integrated manufacturing zones as it scales up India operations

A major shift in Foxconn’s India strategy is taking shape as the company looks beyond traditional factory expansion.

In 2025, the Taiwanese Hon Hai Technology Group has stepped up efforts to grow its manufacturing presence in India, following a model similar to what it previously built in China. Foxconn is the world’s largest contract manufacturer and assembles most of Apple’s iPhone and other devices. As part of its expansion, its Indian arm, Yuzhan Technology India, has announced an investment of $1.5 billion, around Rs. 13,500 crore, to scale up operations. The plans appear to go beyond adding new assembly lines.

In China, Foxconn operates large industrial campuses that combine factories with housing, hospitals, shopping areas, and schools. These setups also cluster related component units across regions, creating large factory driven cities. Such models are rare outside China due to the high demand for land, capital, and long term planning. In many countries, factories are usually located on city outskirts, with urban areas supporting the workforce.

Foxconn now seems to be adapting this approach for India. In May, the company confirmed the $1.5 billion investment, a move linked to Apple’s push to diversify its supply chain away from China. This shift follows higher tariff pressures from the US and earlier disruptions during the COVID 19 pandemic.

The company has already hired about 30,000 workers in 2025 for its iPhone assembly facility near Bengaluru. Nearly 80 percent of these hires are women, according to a business daily. The facility reportedly spans hundreds of acres and is expected to become Foxconn’s largest plant in India, with over 10 assembly lines once fully developed.

A technology publication has reported that Foxconn is planning integrated manufacturing zones in India. These zones are expected to include residential areas, healthcare services, schools, and recreational spaces for workers.

Along with its existing plants near Bengaluru and in Tamil Nadu, Foxconn is also said to be exploring a 300 acre site in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. This location could mark the company’s first major base in Northern India. Separately, the Foxconn HCL semiconductor venture is also planned in Uttar Pradesh.

If these plans materialise, India could become the second country after China to host a factory city style manufacturing ecosystem focused on large scale production and quality.
