Bihar has entered the high performance computing landscape with the commissioning of its first Param Rudra supercomputer at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna.
The system has gone live under the National Supercomputing Mission, marking a major milestone for the state. Describing the development as a significant moment, IIT Patna Director T N Singh said, “a historic milestone, a matter of great happiness for all of us,” and added that the facility will enable students, faculty, and researchers to handle complex computing tasks across multiple disciplines.
The supercomputer was launched by Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Highlighting the national progress under the mission, Sinha said, “Under the NSM, 37 supercomputers have been deployed across the nation with a combined compute capacity of 39 PetaFlops.” He also noted that more systems are being added as India continues to develop indigenous supercomputing technologies.
According to IIT Patna, the Param Rudra facility is expected to support around 60 faculty members and 400 students across 10 departments. The computing power will be used for advanced research in areas such as AI, data science, quantum computing, and other emerging domains.
An official from IIT Patna said, “It is the first Param Rudra supercomputer established in any institute or government office in Bihar.” The institute added that the facility will strengthen research capabilities and academic outcomes while aligning the state with India’s broader push toward self-reliance in high performance computing.
The launch places IIT Patna among the growing list of institutions contributing to the country’s expanding supercomputing infrastructure under the National Supercomputing Mission.
