A strong push towards technology and data driven operations is reshaping the way rail travel functions across the country, according to Indian Railways Year End Review 2025.
The review highlights that technology, digitalisation and early adoption of artificial intelligence are now central to railway operations. Indian Railways is evolving into a digitally managed public infrastructure system, moving beyond its traditional role as a transport provider.
One of the key focus areas is safety. The continued rollout of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system marks a major shift towards digitally controlled signalling and real time safety monitoring. Kavach is designed to prevent collisions and overspeeding by automatically intervening during risk situations, helping reduce human error and improve operational discipline across a high density rail network.
The review also points to the use of artificial intelligence in safety alert systems, particularly to assist loco pilots. While details remain limited, this signals an early move towards AI based decision support in live operations. These AI driven alerts are aimed at analysing conditions, flagging risks and supporting timely responses, making railway operations more predictive and responsive.
Digital transformation is equally visible in passenger services. Integrated digital platforms are increasingly being used for travel planning, service access and information sharing. This shift reflects a move towards unified digital engagement, with software platforms becoming a key interface between passengers and the rail system.
Connectivity plays a vital role in this transition. The expansion of Wi Fi services across stations supports real time information sharing, digital payments and smart station services. Connectivity is being treated as a core infrastructure layer rather than a passenger amenity.
Station redevelopment initiatives further show the blend of physical and digital upgrades. Modernised stations now feature electronic information displays, upgraded communication systems and technology enabled amenities, creating connected and data supported transport hubs.
Beyond passenger services, digital tools are also being used for monitoring, scheduling and operational coordination. The review positions Indian Railways as steadily embedding technology across its ecosystem, with a strong focus on indigenous solutions and future ready rail operations.
