A leading global chip designer has signaled growing interest in India as a potential manufacturing partner in its supply chain.
MediaTek, one of the world’s largest fabless semiconductor companies, has said it is open to sourcing more chips from India as the country’s semiconductor ecosystem continues to mature. The statement from the company’s India leadership highlights India’s rising importance beyond being a large consumer market.
MediaTek designs chips but does not operate its own fabrication plants. It relies on manufacturing partners to produce its processors. Any move to source chips from India will depend on the country’s ability to deliver reliable capabilities across fabrication, advanced packaging and OSAT, testing, materials, and consistent yield and quality that meet global scale and performance standards.
India already plays a major role for MediaTek as one of the largest markets for smartphones and connected devices powered by its chips. Local sourcing could help reduce lead times, diversify supply risks, and support India’s push for domestic electronics manufacturing and stronger supply chain resilience. It would also benefit device makers assembling products in India by increasing local value addition over time.
For India’s semiconductor ambitions, MediaTek’s position sends an important signal. Global chip designers are willing to engage if India can offer predictable and scalable production, stable costs, secure supply chains, and strong protection of intellectual property. Depth in packaging and testing capabilities is also seen as critical, especially for advanced AI and 5G chips. Another key factor is closer collaboration between chip design and manufacturing within the country.
The interest from MediaTek reflects a broader global shift. Semiconductor companies are increasingly adopting multi country strategies to reduce over dependence on single regions. MediaTek’s comments echo earlier indications that it is prepared to manufacture chips in it once local capacity becomes operational.
While the openness from MediaTek is a clear vote of confidence, turning this interest into actual production orders will depend on execution. It’s success will rest on its ability to deliver across the entire semiconductor value chain, not just policy announcements or future plans.
