Uttar Pradesh strengthens cybercrime response by training over 84,000 police personnel

A large scale capacity building effort is underway in Uttar Pradesh as the state sharpens its response to rising cybercrime linked to growing digital activity.

The state government has trained and certified 84,705 police personnel through a dedicated Cyber Crime Training Portal. The initiative aims to equip law enforcement officers with advanced technical skills to investigate cyber fraud, online financial crimes, and other technology driven offences. Details of the programme were shared in the state assembly.

Officials highlighted that cybercrime infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh has expanded significantly over the past few years. Before 2017, the state had only 2 cybercrime police stations located in Lucknow and Gautam Buddh Nagar. This changed with a phased rollout that led to the establishment of 16 regional cybercrime police stations on February 6, 2020, followed by 57 district level cybercrime stations on December 14, 2023.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau report titled “Crime in India 2023”, Uttar Pradesh recorded 10,794 cybercrime cases in 2023, up from 10,117 cases in 2022. The data underlines the need for stronger enforcement and specialised skills within the police force.

The government informed the assembly that cybercrime police stations are now operational in all 75 districts. In addition, cyber cells have been set up in every district police station and are staffed with trained personnel to ensure faster complaint registration and investigation.

Public awareness has also been a key focus area. Officials said 65,966 cyber safety awareness programmes have been conducted across public places in the state to educate citizens about online risks and safe digital practices.

To strengthen victim support, the cyber crime helpline number 1930 has been expanded from 20 seats to 50 seats and now operates 24 hours a day. Authorities noted that the combination of specialised training, expanded infrastructure, and large scale public outreach is helping improve prevention, reporting, and control of cybercrime across Uttar Pradesh.
