Xiaomi 17 Ultra set to debut with advanced Leica powered camera upgrades

Fresh details have emerged about Xiaomi next flagship smartphone, offering a closer look at its major camera upgrades ahead of launch.

Xiaomi has confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will be officially launched in China on December 25. The company has already revealed its slim design, measuring 8.29mm in thickness, along with three colour options including black, green and white.

New information shared by Xiaomi Chief Executive Officer Lei Jun focuses on the phone imaging system, which has been developed in partnership with Leica. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra will feature a Leica 1 inch Light and Shadow Master main camera powered by the new Light and Shadow Hunter 1050L image sensor.

This sensor uses lateral overflow integration capacitor technology, designed to improve dynamic range directly at the hardware level. The upgrade is expected to preserve highlights and shadows more accurately in high contrast and low light scenes, while also reducing overexposure.

The same technology is said to enhance video recording by adjusting exposure on a frame by frame basis. This allows cleaner high dynamic range video capture, especially during night scenes.

Lei Jun also revealed that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will include a new Leica backed 200 megapixel optical zoom telephoto camera. The system supports continuous optical zoom from 75mm to 100mm and delivers full 200 megapixel images across the entire zoom range without digital cropping.

The telephoto camera uses a Leica APO certified mobile lens with a 3G and 5P dual floating lens group. According to Xiaomi, the optical design follows principles used in traditional camera zoom lenses and represents a next generation telephoto solution for smartphones.

The setup also offers four portrait focused focal lengths through optical zoom, giving users more flexibility for portrait photography.
