Bengaluru cybercrime unit takes action against social media pages sharing obscene links

Authorities have stepped up action against the misuse of social media platforms to circulate explicit material in Bengaluru.

The Central cybercrime police have registered a case against multiple social media handles for allegedly promoting and sharing lewd content online. The case was filed on December 16 under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which relates to the publishing or transmission of obscene material in electronic form.

According to the First Information Report, unidentified individuals were found posting reels and content that directed users to explicit material. These posts reportedly carried captions such as “Link in bio, DM For Video”, encouraging viewers to access or request inappropriate content.

The complaint submitted to the police includes a list of 28 Instagram reel links that were posted over the past month. Officials stated that these posts were being used to lure users and promote objectionable material through indirect links and private messages.

A police official confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to identify the individuals operating the accounts and to determine the source and spread of the content. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe.

The case highlights growing concerns around the misuse of popular social media platforms for sharing illegal and obscene material, prompting stricter monitoring by cybercrime authorities.
