A new step toward tackling deepfakes is underway as Google expands its content verification features within Gemini.
Google has introduced a new tool in Gemini that allows users to detect whether a video was created or edited using the company’s artificial intelligence models and tools. Users can now upload a video file to the Gemini app or website and check for the use of AI. The feature is being rolled out globally and will be available to all users. This update comes around 1 month after Google added a similar detection tool for AI generated images.
In a blog post, Google said the new AI video verification tool is part of its ongoing effort to strengthen content transparency. As AI systems become more capable of producing realistic images and videos, concerns around deepfake content have increased.
To address this challenge, Google introduced SynthID in 2023. SynthID is an imperceptible digital watermarking technology designed for Google AI products. Since its launch, the technology has been enhanced to watermark AI generated text, images, audio, and videos. In addition to embedding watermarks, SynthID can also detect whether content was created or modified using Google’s AI tools, even if the content has been cropped, copied, or edited outside the original platform.
Initially, access to SynthID detection was limited to academic researchers and select partners. Over time, Google has expanded availability to a wider group of users. In November, the company added a SynthID based image verification feature to Gemini. With the latest update, the video detection capability has now been rolled out.
To verify a video, users can upload it to Gemini and ask, “Was it created or edited using AI?” Gemini then examines the audio and video tracks separately to look for the presence of the SynthID watermark. For example, if only the audio has been modified using AI, Gemini may respond with “SynthID detected within the audio between 10-20 secs. No SynthID detected in the visuals.”
Google noted certain limitations for the tool. Users can currently upload videos with a maximum file size of 100MB and a maximum length of 90 seconds. Videos that exceed these limits are not supported at this time. The AI video detection tool is available in all countries and languages supported by Gemini.
