Meta tests link posting limits for Facebook creators and pages

A new experiment on Facebook could change how creators and brands share external links on the platform.

Meta has begun testing a restriction that limits the number of links professional accounts and Facebook Pages can post, unless they subscribe to the paid Meta Verified plan. Users included in the test are reportedly allowed to post only 2 links unless they opt for a Meta Verified subscription, which starts at $14.99 per month.

The test was first noticed over the past week and shared by social media strategist Matt Navarra. Screenshots indicate that while the limit applies to standard link posts, users can still share affiliate links, post links in comments, and link to content from Meta owned platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Meta confirmed the test to a technology publication and said it applies specifically to users operating in professional mode and to Facebook Pages. Professional mode allows users to turn personal profiles into creator profiles, enabling wider content discovery.

“This is a limited test to understand whether the ability to publish an increased volume of posts with links adds additional value for Meta Verified subscribers,” a Meta spokesperson said.

The move could directly affect creators and brands that rely on linking to blogs, websites, or external platforms to reach audiences. Meta said the goal is to explore ways to increase the value of Meta Verified. The company clarified that publishers are not currently part of this test and that links shared in comments are not affected.

In its Q3 transparency report, Meta said over 98% of feed views in the U.S. came from posts without links. Only 1.9% of views were from posts containing links, most of which came from followed pages. Linked posts from friends and groups were minimal. The report also showed YouTube, TikTok, and GoFundMe as the most shared domains.

If the test expands, creators may be pushed to post more native content or content from Meta platforms, unless they choose to pay for verification.
