Google expands Gemini with Opal mini app builder on web

Google is continuing to add new capabilities to Gemini as it brings Opal, its AI powered mini app creation tool, to the web version of the chatbot.

First introduced under Google Labs in July, Opal allows users to “build and share powerful AI mini apps that chain together prompts, models, and tools – all using simple natural language and visual editing.” With this update, the tool is now accessible directly through Gemini on the web.

Users can find Opal by opening the hamburger menu on the top left of Gemini and selecting Gems. This section displays a range of pre built Gems, which are essentially mini apps created using Opal. Users can try these presets, remix them, or open the Advanced Editor to build a mini app from scratch.

Although Opal remains in an experimental phase, it offers a wide set of features. The tool begins by asking users to describe the type of app they want to create. It then uses multiple AI models to generate the required workflow. Once the mini app is ready, users can view and customise it in the editor pane. They can also review and edit the prompts to fine tune or change how the app functions.

Google has clarified that Opal operates separately from Gemini. As a result, data generated through Opal may not appear in Gemini’s Apps Activity section.

Along with making Opal available on the Gemini web interface, Google has upgraded the tool’s visual editor. When Opal converts user prompts into step by step actions for building mini apps, users can now more easily edit and control how those steps work.

With this move, Google is positioning Gemini as not just a conversational AI, but also a space where users can experiment, build, and share lightweight AI powered applications using simple language and visual tools.
