Cognizant has taken a major step in its India expansion plan as it started work on a new technology campus in Visakhapatnam. The company also opened an interim techfin centre in the city, which will support operations while the main facility is being built.
The US based technology and professional services company said the upcoming campus will have capacity for 8,000 seats and will be developed in three phases by 2033. The total planned investment for the project is Rs 1,583 crore. Construction of the first phase will begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed in early 2029. This phase will accommodate 3,000 associates.
At the foundation ceremony, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said, “We are proud to welcome Cognizant to Visakhapatnam, a landmark step in advancing our vision of transforming Andhra Pradesh into a world class destination where global enterprises can build, innovate and grow.”
The state’s IT and Industries Minister Nara Lokesh added that the expansion “will unlock new opportunities for our youth and further strengthen the city’s position as the financial capital of the state.”
Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S said the new campus and the interim centre highlight the company’s confidence in the city’s talent pool. “The groundbreaking of our new campus and opening of an interim techfin centre in Visakhapatnam reflects our confidence in the city’s talent and future potential,” he said.
The interim techfin centre will focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital engineering and cloud services. It also features a client experience area and collaborative spaces for teams.
This development comes after Cognizant opened new delivery centres in Bhubaneswar and Indore, along with a techfin hub in GIFT City in Gujarat. India remains central to the company’s global delivery network, with existing centres across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Delhi NCR.
The announcement also follows the launch of Cognizant’s India Artificial Intelligence Lab and the Cognizant Moment Studio in Bengaluru. These are part of the company’s USD 1 billion commitment to generative AI made in 2023. The India AI Lab extends the company’s San Francisco AI Lab, which recently received its 61st US patent, and will focus on multi agent systems, AI decisioning, responsible AI and AI for good programmes.
