Apple prepares to introduce upgraded AirTag and new HomePod mini for early 2026 launch

Apple is anticipated to launch the second-generation AirTag in the first half of next year.

While we await the official announcement, new information about the smart tracker has reportedly been found in the internal build of iOS 26. The code also suggests features for the upcoming HomePod mini. The new AirTag 2 is expected to provide a quicker pairing process and better battery level reporting.

The updated HomePod mini is rumored to utilize Apple’s S10 chip. However, the speaker may not support Apple Intelligence features.

Apple’s New AirTag Could Bring These Upgrades

References to a new, unreleased AirTag model and HomePod mini were identified by Macworld in an internal iOS 26 build. This indicates that Apple is gearing up to launch a second-generation AirTag with new functionalities such as improved pairing processes. It is also expected to feature enhanced Precision Finding and detailed battery level reporting.

Additionally, the new model is rumored to include an ‘improved moving’ feature that will allow users to track the AirTag’s location even while it is in motion. The upcoming device could also enhance tracking capabilities in crowded environments. Some of these enhancements might be available for the current AirTag through a software update.

The report suggests that the newly discovered AirTag features are specifically designed for iOS 26, implying that Apple may reveal them in the first half of 2026. These features are reportedly internally referred to as “2025AirTag,” indicating that the second-generation AirTag was originally intended for the 2025 release but has been postponed to next year.

Meanwhile, the new HomePod mini is said to be under development with the codename B252. It is expected to come equipped with Apple’s S10 chip, the same chip found in the latest Apple Watch models.

In comparison, the current HomePod mini is equipped with an S5 chip internally.

The new HomePod mini probably won’t include Apple Intelligence features. These AI functionalities are anticipated to be exclusive to Apple’s forthcoming smart home hub.

Apple introduced the first-generation AirTag in April 2021, priced at Rs. 3,190 for one unit and Rs. 10,999 for a set of four. The HomePod mini debuted in October 2020 at a cost of Rs. 9,900.
