A new immigration pathway introduced by Australia is creating strong interest among Indian professionals by offering direct permanent residency without the need for money, job offers or a points based system.
Australia has launched the National Innovation Visa, which officially came into effect in December 2024. The new visa replaces the earlier Global Talent Visa and changes how the country attracts skilled migrants. The focus is now firmly on proven excellence and global impact.
Under this visa, successful applicants are granted permanent residency from day one. They receive full access to public healthcare and education, along with a clear path to citizenship. Family members are also included. There is no requirement for employer sponsorship, job offers or financial investment.
“This is not a migration program,” the Department of Home Affairs states. “It is a targeted strategy to bring in global impact makers.”
For Indian professionals, this move removes two of the biggest barriers to migration which are capital requirements and dependence on employers. The visa is open to individuals with strong global achievements in areas such as technology, healthcare, agritech and the creative arts.
Eligibility is not linked to a score or points test. Instead, applicants must show clear international recognition. This can include patents, awards, research publications, leadership roles or a globally respected professional track record. A key condition is the need for a nominator. This can be either an individual or an organisation in Australia with national standing.
The process involves submitting an Expression of Interest, collecting proof of achievements, securing a valid nominator and going through a merit based review. If selected, permanent residency is granted directly.
A migration lawyer based in Adelaide described the visa as one made for people with extraordinary careers, not just strong resumes.
The program is invite only. Applicants cannot apply unless they are shortlisted. Those under 18 or over 55 must also prove that their presence delivers exceptional value to Australia’s national interest.
Even with these conditions, the opportunity is seen as a major breakthrough. For many Indian professionals with verified global success, the National Innovation Visa offers a rare and direct path to building a future in Australia without the usual hurdles.
