Instagram adds new option to reshare public Stories without being tagged

Sharing content on Instagram just became easier with a new update that removes the need to be tagged to reshare Stories from public accounts.

Instagram has rolled out a feature that allows users to reshare any Story from a public profile directly to their own Story, even if they are not tagged in the original post. The update was confirmed through a post on Threads. Creators who do not want their Stories to be reshared can switch off the feature through their privacy settings.

Earlier, users could only reshare a Story if they were tagged in it. If someone forgot to tag them, the only option was to take a screenshot. With this new change, any public Story can now be reshared directly, making the process faster and more convenient.

The feature functions in a way similar to the repost option for public Reels and feed posts that Instagram introduced earlier this year. That feature allowed users to share content directly to their own feeds with automatic credit to the original creator.

To reshare a public Story, users need to open the Instagram app and tap on a Story from a public account. A share option will now appear near the message box. Tapping it and selecting “Add to your story” will allow the Story to appear on the user’s profile. The original creator will be automatically credited, just like with shared Reels.

The update is being released gradually to users around the world on both iOS and Android. Some users may already see the feature live, while others may receive it soon.

Public accounts that do not want their Stories to be reshared will need to change their privacy settings manually. To turn off the feature, users must go to Settings and Activity in the app, tap on Privacy, select Story and then switch off the option that reads “Allow sharing to story”. Once disabled, followers will no longer be able to reshare their Stories.
