What began as a routine investigation into a small online scam in Rudrapur has now exposed a large international gaming fraud network with links to Dubai. Uttarakhand Police say the racket targeted thousands of people across India and siphoned off about ₹5.54 crore in just three months.
During a raid at a building in Rudrapur last week, police discovered an organised setup that used fake gaming apps to trap users. Victims were first promised small winnings of ₹500 to ₹600. Once they gained confidence, they were pushed to deposit higher amounts, which were then transferred through bank accounts linked to the gang.
Police believe the main accused, Manjeet Singh, also known as Sonu, had earlier worked at a call center in Dubai. After returning to India, he allegedly used his experience in cyber fraud to set up a similar operation in Rudrapur. Investigators estimate that around 50,000 people may have been cheated during this period.
The group had created a fake call center using rented rooms. From there, they used customised software, automatic calling systems, and fake mobile numbers to reach potential victims. People who showed interest in gaming offers were guided step by step to send money into mule accounts.
The case moved forward after the arrest of Amritpal, a local resident booked earlier in three online cheating cases. During questioning, he allegedly revealed Manjeet’s role in running the network. Raids later led to the arrest of suspects from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Nepal.
Investigators found that victims were sometimes tricked into sharing banking details or installing remote access apps, allowing the gang to directly control their phones and move money. To keep users engaged, the first few games were designed to show fake wins.
Police seized 13 mobile phones, 13 laptops, two computer systems, and several SIM cards registered with fake identities. Officials also confirmed regular contact between the gang and handlers based in Dubai. Six people have been arrested so far, and more arrests are expected.
