India has begun laying the foundation for a homegrown artificial intelligence ecosystem with the creation of BharatGen, a new AI organisation established by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Registered on 7 November 2025 at its Powai campus, BharatGen aims to develop a sovereign Large Language Model that understands India’s many languages, accents, scripts and cultural expressions.
The initiative marks a major step forward for India’s AI ambitions. BharatGen’s goal is to build technology that can work seamlessly across more than twenty two Indian languages and support applications in text, speech and document processing. The focus is on creating an AI system that reflects the way people across the country communicate in daily life.
The organisation has secured significant funding support. It has received two hundred and thirty five crore rupees from the Department of Science and Technology and one thousand and fifty eight crore rupees from the Ministry of Electronics and IT under the IndiaAI Mission. According to the foundation’s founder director quoted by a common publication, forming a dedicated company gives the team the speed and flexibility needed to take large scale models from early research to practical deployment.
BharatGen is building its capabilities with the help of a consortium of leading institutions, including several IITs and IIITs. As part of its roadmap, it plans to release distilled versions of its models. This will allow startups and businesses to use advanced AI tools without investing in expensive hardware or large research teams.
The long term vision is clear. By creating a strong national AI backbone, BharatGen aims to support the next wave of innovation and enable the creation of applications that match India’s multilingual and multicultural landscape.
