PNP arrests 106 suspects in nationwide cybercrime crackdown as holiday scams rise

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has arrested 106 suspects in a nationwide crackdown on cybercrimes, urging the public to remain alert as online scams usually increase during the Christmas season. Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the suspects were involved in offences ranging from digital fraud to online sexual exploitation. They were apprehended through sting operations, the service of warrants and a rescue mission.

Police confirmed that the operations also led to the rescue of 18 victims and 15 children in conflict with the law. Officials said this shows how online crimes are increasingly targeting and exploiting vulnerable groups. “We continue to strengthen our drive against cybercrimes not only because it is our mandate, but because millions of Filipinos depend on us to protect them in the digital space,” Nartatez said.

Data shared by the Anti Cybercrime Group showed a rise in cybercrime enforcement activity in November. The PNP filed 188 cases, including 120 regular filings and 68 inquests. The group also implemented 97 cyber warrants, carried out 68 digital forensic examinations and conducted 2365 cyber patrols across different platforms. Police reported that their efforts resulted in the conviction of 22 individuals linked to online fraud schemes and exploitation cases.

Authorities expect cybercriminal activity to increase further during the holiday period. Nartatez warned that online criminals often “take advantage of the Christmas rush” by creating fake promotions, phishing messages, misleading job offers and fraudulent e commerce deals. He advised the public to be cautious when shopping online, responding to unsolicited messages or sharing personal information. “Think twice before clicking or sharing personal information, especially when dealing with suspicious offers,” Nartatez said.
