Nokia has partnered with Bharti Airtel to make the telecom company’s 5G capabilities available to developers through the Nokia Network as Code platform. The collaboration aims to create new monetisable digital solutions across multiple sectors by allowing developers to access Airtel’s 5G mobile network functions.
Airtel’s 5G network, which currently runs on non standalone architecture, will be offered to third party developers using Nokia’s platform. After completing successful trials, Airtel’s network APIs will be provided on a subscription model to developers, system integrators and enterprises already working within Nokia’s global ecosystem.
According to both companies, this move will help the developer community build advanced applications using Airtel’s capabilities such as AI, 5G and edge computing. Network APIs enable operators to virtualise parts of their networks and offer customised data and network features to app builders. The telecom industry sees such platforms as an opportunity to generate new revenue streams at a time when large scale 5G use cases are still emerging.
Sharat Sinha, CEO of Airtel Business, said, “At Airtel, we are always working toward bringing the ecosystem together to collaborate for future ready innovations…we are happy to partner with Nokia today for network APIs and enable the ecosystem to leverage our network capabilities for automation and building secure and innovative digital services.”
Arvind Khurana, head of cloud and network services in India at Nokia, said the partnership strengthens the Network as Code ecosystem and helps telecom operators unlock more value from their infrastructure investments. Nokia’s platform has already expanded to more than 60 partners, including telecom operators, AI companies, data center customers, CPaaS providers, system integrators and independent software vendors.
Meanwhile, Nokia’s competitor had earlier formed Aduna, a joint venture with major telecom players including Reliance Jio and Airtel, to develop and offer network API services.
