WhatsApp urges users to secure their accounts by enabling PIN based two step verification

WhatsApp is reminding users to strengthen the security of their accounts by turning on its two step verification feature. This added layer of protection helps prevent unauthorised access, especially since the platform is widely used for personal conversations, financial information and important contacts.

Two step verification requires users to enter a six digit PIN whenever they try to register their WhatsApp number on a new device. The feature can be enabled, updated or turned off directly within the app on both Android and iPhone.

To activate two step verification, users need to open WhatsApp settings, tap on the account section and select two step verification followed by turn on or set up PIN. After entering and confirming a six digit PIN, users can add an email address to help recover their account if they forget the code. WhatsApp recommends adding an email address because without it, resetting a forgotten PIN requires a mandatory seven day waiting period.

Users may also disable the feature at any time by going to account settings and selecting turn off. Changing the PIN is equally simple and can be done through the same menu.

For those who want to manage or update their recovery email, WhatsApp allows users to add a new email or change the existing one by entering the verification code sent to their inbox. Keeping this email address active and up to date is important for smooth account recovery.

With two step verification enabled, WhatsApp accounts gain an essential security barrier, reducing the risk of misuse and helping users safeguard their private data.
