GPT 5.1 Codex Max begins public preview rollout for GitHub Copilot users

OpenAI’s GPT 5.1 Codex Max model is now entering public preview on GitHub Copilot, bringing enhanced coding and conversational capabilities to developers across multiple platforms. The rollout has begun and will reach users gradually.

The new model will be available to Copilot Pro, Pro Plus, Business and Enterprise subscribers. Users can select GPT 5.1 Codex Max from the Copilot Chat model picker in Visual Studio Code across all modes including chat, ask, edit and agent. The model will also appear in Copilot Chat on the GitHub website, the GitHub mobile app on iOS and Android and the Copilot command line interface.

If users do not see the option immediately, they are advised to check again as the rollout is phased.

To enable access, organisations under Enterprise and Business plans will require administrators to activate the GPT 5.1 Codex Max policy in the Copilot settings. Once this is switched on, all users in that organisation will be able to choose the model from the picker. Individual users on Pro and Pro Plus plans can activate the model by selecting it and confirming a one time prompt. Those using the bring your own key option can enable it by selecting Manage Models, choosing GPT 5.1 Codex Max and entering their API key.

GitHub has shared that users can explore all available models and learn how to begin using them through its documentation.
