Telecom operators in India are calling for over the top communication platforms to conduct their own user verification processes instead of depending on SIM based checks carried out by mobile carriers. At present, SIM cards undergo verification before activation, but telecom companies argue that OTT platforms should complete separate verification using customer application forms and follow the same audit guidelines that telecom operators follow.
This demand follows a recent regulatory directive that connects messaging apps with users’ SIM cards. Industry members believe shifting verification responsibility to OTT platforms will increase transparency and improve accountability. A senior executive from the telecom sector said that operators invest significant resources in staff and systems for SIM verification, and warned that platforms relying only on that process weaken overall security.
Those supporting the proposal believe it could improve traceability and help reduce misuse of messaging services. However, some voices within the OTT ecosystem caution that such a move may complicate onboarding, create additional verification steps, and raise concerns related to privacy and user experience.
The debate is ongoing, and its final outcome is expected to influence how user identity and verification standards evolve across India’s digital communication landscape.
