BSNL says over 97000 new 4G sites installed and fully upgradable to 5G

A major update on India’s telecom expansion was shared in Parliament as BSNL confirmed that it has installed 97068 new 4G sites across the country, out of which 93511 are already on air as of October thirty one. The sites have been developed under an indigenous procurement plan and are fully upgradable to 5G technology.

Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said that BSNL placed the purchase order for locally developed 4G equipment for nationwide deployment, with supplies starting in September twenty twenty three. He added that the company is also working on several government backed network improvement schemes, including the 4G Saturation Scheme, Border Out Post and Border Intelligence Post projects, and the LWE Phase One upgrade initiative.

BSNL has set a target to upgrade all its 4G towers to 5G within eight months. Alongside this, the operator is replacing old and expired tower batteries in phases. Diesel generator sets are being used where needed, depending on power conditions and revenue priority. Many new 4G base station sites built under Digital Bharat Nidhi are running primarily on solar power.

The state owned telecom firm recorded strong financial performance in the first half of the current fiscal year. BSNL reported revenue of eleven thousand one hundred thirty four crore rupees in H1 FY26 and achieved ninety three per cent of its second quarter revenue target with around five thousand three hundred forty seven crore rupees. The company’s annual revenue goal for FY26 is set at twenty seven thousand five hundred crore rupees, higher than the previous year’s twenty five thousand crore rupees.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia praised the organisation’s leadership teams, saying, “Everything in life is execution driven, and our CGMs are BSNL’s execution artists. You are the standard bearers of transformation across your circles.” He stressed that quality of service must remain the organisation’s “non-negotiable mantra” and encouraged BSNL circles to explore new revenue opportunities as part of the company’s diversification strategy.
