Cyberattack hits Iberia, the Spanish airline emphasizes no financial data stolen

Iberia, the Spanish airline, has confirmed that hackers accessed confidential customer information, making it the latest airline to face a cybersecurity incident. Despite the breach, Iberia reassured customers that there is no evidence the stolen data has been used for fraudulent purposes.

In a message to customers, Iberia stated, “Iberia has detected a security incident involving unauthorised access to the systems of one of our service providers, which has compromised the confidentiality of certain data.” The airline clarified that the compromised information includes customer names, loyalty card membership details, and contact information, while stressing that passwords and bank card information were not affected.

Iberia emphasized that it took immediate action to address the breach. “As soon as we became aware, we immediately activated our security protocols and procedures, adopting all necessary technical and organisational measures to contain it, mitigate its effects, and prevent it from happening again in the future,” the airline said. Iberia assured customers that all steps are being taken to safeguard sensitive information and prevent further incidents.

The Iberia data breach follows similar attacks in the airline industry. In August, Air France-KLM reported “fraudulent access” to some customer data, while Australian airline Qantas disclosed that information from parts of its 5.7 million customers was stolen in a major cyberattack targeting software provider Salesforce. That same attack affected other major companies including Disney, Google, IKEA, Toyota, and McDonald’s, highlighting the increasing risks of cyberattacks. Iberia’s incident underscores the importance of data security measures for global airlines and their customers.
