Telangana food safety department finds expired goods and labelling issues in inspections of major e commerce warehouses

The Telangana Food Safety Department conducted a surprise inspection of 75 warehouses linked to leading e commerce platforms and local suppliers. The drive resulted in the seizure of expired and mislabelled food items, the collection of samples for testing and the issue of 32 improvement notices to facilities that failed to meet safety norms.

The inspection covered warehouses associated with Zepto, Reliance JioMart, Blinkit, BigBasket, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Amazon and several local units. The department said the special drive involved checking stored products, labelling practices and hygiene standards. Officials said that 98 enforcement samples and 124 surveillance samples were taken during the operation.

According to the details shared by the Commissioner of Food Safety on a social media platform, officials seized 1903 units of expired or misbranded food products with misleading labels. They also discarded 76 kilograms of expired articles, stale food and rotten vegetables.

Following the inspections, 32 improvement notices were issued to the concerned warehouses. These notices require the facilities to correct safety lapses and comply with food safety regulations.

This was not the first enforcement activity conducted by the department. In early November, the food safety department inspected 12 food outlets along major highways in the state. The outlets were located along national highways connecting Hyderabad with Vijayawada, Warangal and Kurnool. Severe violations were found at one outlet, including unhygienic kitchen conditions, rodent infestation, improper storage, clogged drains and suspected use of synthetic colours. Officials suspended the licence of the establishment and discarded more than 107 kilograms of unsafe food on site.

The department also noted poor hygiene, expired ingredients, unlabelled items and reuse of cooking oil at several other outlets inspected during the earlier drive. It lifted seven samples and issued eight improvement notices to the establishments.
