The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced a new feature for the recently launched Aadhaar app on Friday. The app, which became available on the Play Store and the App Store on November 9, will soon allow users to update their mobile number. This feature will use a one time password and face authentication to link a new number. It will expand the app from a digital identity viewing platform to one that also supports data updates. The new app is not replacing the older mAadhaar app.
UIDAI shared the update in a post on a common social platform. It said that users of the new Aadhaar app will soon be able to change the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar card through the app. This will remove the need to visit centres and wait in queues. Users will be able to update their mobile number with an OTP and face authentication.
The authority has also asked early users to share feedback about their experience. Those who want to share feedback can write to feedback dot app at uidai dot net dot in.
This is the first new feature added to the app since its launch. Earlier, users could only add their own Aadhaar ID and the IDs of their family members if they were linked to the same phone number. The app allows up to five Aadhaar profiles. It also includes biometric locks to secure data, the option to share QR codes and verifiable credentials, and the ability to scan QR codes related to Aadhaar services.
To use the Aadhaar app, users must first download and install it from the Play Store or App Store. They then select a language and enter their twelve digit Aadhaar number. The app will ask to send an SMS from the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. After entering the OTP, users will complete face authentication. They will then set a six digit password. Once done, the Aadhaar card will appear on the profile page. Users can mask it, share it, or add a biometric lock. The same steps can be used to add up to four more Aadhaar profiles.
