Many ChatGPT users have recently received a security alert that raised concern, but OpenAI has clarified that the vast majority of people using the service face no risk. The message was sent widely after the company confirmed a breach at Mixpanel, an external analytics provider used only for activity tracking on the API dashboard. This incident did not involve ChatGPT’s main systems and did not touch any sensitive personal information.
OpenAI published an advisory explaining why every subscriber was notified even though only a small group of users might have been affected. The breach did not expose chat histories, passwords, API keys, payment information or any protected data. OpenAI stated that the issue is limited to individuals who have an API account and use platform.openai.com, and that the compromised information came from Mixpanel’s exported logs rather than its own systems.
According to the company, the data that may have been visible includes account names, linked email addresses, approximate location based on browser activity, operating system details, browser type, referrer sites and internal user or organisation IDs. OpenAI has already removed Mixpanel from all production environments and is carrying out a full investigation to determine how many accounts were included. Organisations are also being contacted directly so administrators can check whether any of their team accounts fall inside the impacted group.
Reports suggested that employees of a major technology company were among those whose details may have been exposed through API usage, but OpenAI noted that no customer data from any organisation was compromised. The company’s choice to notify every user, including those not affected, appears intended to prevent confusion and reduce the possibility of misinformation. Regular ChatGPT users who only access the app or website for conversations do not face any risk, while API developers are advised to review the details shared by OpenAI and watch for further updates as the investigation continues.
