OpenAI says some API user data may have been exposed in Mixpanel breach

OpenAI has confirmed that some user information linked to its API accounts may have been exposed following a breach of Mixpanel’s systems. The artificial intelligence company said the incident did not compromise sensitive data and added that it has stopped using Mixpanel services while a full security investigation is under way.

In a newsroom post, OpenAI explained that the breach took place on November 9 when an attacker gained access to Mixpanel’s systems and exported a dataset that included limited information about OpenAI users. Mixpanel informed OpenAI about the issue on November 25 and shared the affected dataset as part of its own investigation.

According to OpenAI, the exposed data did not include API requests, API usage data, passwords, credentials, API keys, payment information, or government identification documents. The company also stated that its servers and products were not impacted.

The data that might have been included in the exported dataset relates to user profiles on “platform.openai.com”. This may include the name provided on the API account, the email address linked to the account, approximate location based on the browser, operating system and browser details, referring websites, and organisation or user IDs.

As part of its response, OpenAI has removed Mixpanel from its production systems. The company said it has reviewed the dataset and is working with Mixpanel and other partners to understand the full impact. “While we have found no evidence of any effect on systems or data outside Mixpanel’s environment, we continue to monitor closely for any signs of misuse,” the company said.

OpenAI has advised potentially affected users to stay cautious and watch for any “credible looking phishing attempts or spam.”
