Rapidus considers second semiconductor plant in Hokkaido

Japanese chipmaker Rapidus is reportedly considering building a second semiconductor plant in Hokkaido to strengthen Japan’s advanced chip manufacturing capabilities. The government backed joint venture includes Sony, Toyota and IBM.

It is expected to begin construction during the financial year of twenty twenty seven to twenty twenty eight. The proposed plant would focus on producing one point four nanometre chips by twenty twenty nine. This follows Rapidus’s first plant which plans to begin mass production of two nanometre chips in twenty twenty seven.

Rapidus has clarified that recent reports about the one point four nanometre facility are speculative and are not based on any official announcement. Meanwhile, major global competitors such as TSMC, Samsung and Intel are also working on one point four nanometre technology. TSMC is expected to begin mass production around twenty twenty eight.

Japan has accelerated its semiconductor plans due to growing concerns about supply chain stability and national security. The push reflects the country’s effort to re establish itself as an important player in the global chip industry.
