Waymo expands robotaxi rides to new US cities as autonomous vehicle rollout accelerates

Waymo has stepped up its autonomous driving push with the launch of fully driverless robotaxi services in Miami. The company, which has spent more than 15 years developing self driving technology, plans to expand to four more cities next: Dallas, Houston, Orlando and San Antonio. Public rides in these locations are expected to begin next year.

The Alphabet owned company has been accelerating its growth plans. By the end of next year, its leaders aim to reach one million rides per week, co CEO Tekedra Mawakana said at a recent event. Waymo outlined its expansion strategy in a blog post, saying it follows a consistent approach when entering new markets.

The company said it compares its driving performance against a proven baseline to validate the Waymo Driver system in each new city. It then fine tunes the AI to handle local driving patterns and conditions. According to the company, this process improves with every expansion. The system is continuously updated through real world driving, advanced simulation and regular software releases.

Waymo says data shows its vehicles are involved in 11 times fewer serious injury crashes compared to human drivers.

The company has already announced plans to open its robotaxi service to the public in Dallas, Denver, Miami, Nashville and Washington DC next year. It has also begun testing in Minneapolis, New Orleans and Tampa. Waymo’s service is currently available in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco, offered through its own app and in some cities via a partnership with Uber.
