Tesla focuses on building a complete EV ecosystem to strengthen its position in India

Tesla is increasing its efforts to support electric vehicle adoption in India as it works to create a strong ecosystem that can sustain long term sales in the country. India became Tesla’s fiftieth global market earlier this year when the company officially began operations.

A report from a common daily said that Tesla’s strategy is centred on expanding the infrastructure needed for smooth EV adoption while helping address rising air quality concerns in major cities. Tesla India General Manager Sharad Agarwal explained that the company plans to build a charging network that connects all major cities. He said that Tesla designs its infrastructure around customer habits such as where they eat, work and travel. The financial daily quoted him saying, “We always build our infrastructure around the lifestyle of our customers, where they eat, where they work, where they go for staycations.”

The company began its India journey by launching two imported Model Y variants. Since then, Tesla has worked on setting up charging points at customers’ homes, at malls, hotels and other destinations and at supercharger locations in key urban centres. In 2025, Tesla sold 109 units after starting deliveries in September. High import duties, which stand at 70 percent, make the Model Y almost 30 percent more expensive in India compared to the United States. The two variants are priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh and are imported from Shanghai.

Infrastructure growth remains a key part of Tesla’s plan. The company opened its first experience centre in Mumbai in July and followed it with a second one at Aerocity in Delhi in August. With the upcoming charging station in Gurugram, Tesla will soon have four charging stations across the country with 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers.

According to the report, Tesla is taking a gradual approach in India and has not announced any plans for local manufacturing. The company is currently focusing on showrooms, imported vehicles and stronger service infrastructure. Globally, Tesla delivered about 497000 vehicles in the September 2025 quarter and reported a 12 percent revenue rise to 28.1 billion dollars. This contributed to a reduction of carbon emissions by 32 million tonnes.

Tesla says that electric vehicles will play an important role in improving air quality in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Agarwal said that cleaner mobility is essential for reducing pollution and added that Tesla aims to accelerate the world’s shift toward sustainability.
