Google is rolling out its new Gemini AI assistant across all navigation modes in Google Maps. Gemini, which replaces Google Assistant as the primary AI assistant in Maps, allows users to start navigation, find places along a route, and share estimated arrival times using simple voice commands.
The rollout is reportedly live for some devices, according to a report, though availability on multiple devices and accounts has not been fully confirmed. Google has updated its support page with instructions for using Gemini in navigation. Initially introduced for Driving mode, the feature now works for walking, cycling, and other navigation modes.
To use Gemini, users can open the Google Maps app on an Android device, enter navigation mode, and say “Hey Google” or tap the microphone. Gemini responds based on the user’s language and voice preferences, which can be adjusted in the settings. The AI assistant can provide location-specific recommendations, translate messages, and activate the conversational Gemini Live experience without tapping a button.
Gemini also enhances hands-free navigation. Drivers can report incidents like accidents or flooding using natural language commands. The assistant integrates with Google Calendar to automatically add events, and it can provide news, sports updates, and other information without interrupting the driving experience.
This integration aims to make Google Maps more intuitive and safer to use by reducing the need for manual input while providing real-time assistance and personalised suggestions.
