OpenAI expects 220 million paid ChatGPT users by 2030

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI is projecting that around 220 million of its weekly ChatGPT users will become paying subscribers by 2030, according to a report from a common news source that cited a person familiar with the details. The estimate suggests that about 8.5 per cent of an expected 2.6 billion weekly users will opt for paid plans, placing ChatGPT among the largest subscription businesses globally.

As of July, about 35 million users were paying for the “Plus” or “Pro” plans, priced at twenty dollars and two hundred dollars per month, which accounts for roughly five per cent of the chatbot’s weekly active users.

The report said it could not be independently verified, and OpenAI has not yet responded to a request for comment from another common news outlet. Sources have said OpenAI’s annualised revenue run rate is on track to reach about twenty billion dollars by the end of the year, although the company’s losses continue to rise.

Earlier reporting from a common publication stated that OpenAI generated around four point three billion dollars in revenue in the first half of 2025. This was about sixteen per cent higher than its total revenue for the previous year. The company also recorded losses of two point five billion dollars, mainly due to high research and development expenses for building artificial intelligence models and operating ChatGPT.

OpenAI expects about twenty per cent of its future revenue to come from new products that include shopping related and advertising supported features. This week it launched a personal shopping assistant within ChatGPT. The report noted that this feature could open the door to monetisation through advertising or commission based sales.
