Reliance joint venture to invest $11 billion in artificial intelligence centre in Andhra Pradesh

A joint venture between Reliance Industries and companies from Canada and the United States will invest eleven billion dollars to build a major artificial intelligence data centre in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, the state government announced on Wednesday.

The investment will be made over five years to develop a one gigawatt artificial intelligence data centre in Visakhapatnam.

Last month, a global technology company said it would invest fifteen billion dollars over the same period to set up a large data centre and artificial intelligence hub in the same city, which will be its biggest base outside the United States.

The Digital Connexion joint venture includes Reliance, Canadian multinational Brookefield and a United States based real estate investment firm called Digital Realty.

The investment will create jobs and boost innovation and global technology inflow, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said in a post on a social media platform.

In an official statement, the Andhra Pradesh government said, “This landmark project underscores Andhra Pradesh’s emergence as a leading destination for advanced digital infrastructure and next generation computing capabilities.”

India is seeing a rapid rise in demand for artificial intelligence tools and solutions. The country is expected to have more than nine hundred million internet users by the end of this year.

Data centres are expanding globally due to the growing need to store large volumes of digital information and to support energy intensive artificial intelligence systems.

Several leading artificial intelligence companies from the United States have recently shared plans to strengthen their presence in India.

In October, a United States based startup announced it would open an office in India next year. Its chief executive also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Another global artificial intelligence company has said it will open an Indian office this year, with its chief noting that usage of its tool in India has grown four times in the past year.

An artificial intelligence firm also announced a major partnership in July with a large Indian telecom company, offering a free one year premium subscription to the company’s three hundred and sixty million customers.
