Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset as the newest member of its mobile platform series. The chipset sits below the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 but still brings strong improvements compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It is designed to offer many of Qualcomm’s latest performance and efficiency enhancements for devices that may not use the Elite version. With upgraded CPU power, GPU capability, AI processing and advanced connectivity features, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is expected to support the next wave of powerful mid premium smartphones.
Qualcomm has built the new chipset on a three nanometre process and has used its latest Oryon CPU architecture. It includes two prime cores running at three point eight gigahertz and six performance cores running at three point three two gigahertz. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 delivers a thirty six percent improvement in CPU performance and an eleven percent improvement in GPU performance when compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 launched in 2023. The chipset also brings forty six percent faster AI performance and thirteen percent better overall efficiency. It uses the Adreno 840 GPU with support for Frame Motion Engine three point zero, although it does not include Adreno High Performance Memory.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 features the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem RF System. It supports mmWave and sub six gigahertz 5G with peak download speeds of up to ten gigabits per second and uplink speeds of up to three point five gigabits per second. The FastConnect 7900 system adds support for WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Ultra Wideband. The chipset supports UFS 4 point 0 storage, while the Elite model supports UFS 4 point 1.
For imaging, the chipset uses a triple twenty bit Spectra AI ISP that offers Night Vision three point zero for low light video at sixty frames per second, real time tone control and HDR audio recording with Snapdragon Audio Sense. It supports up to a three hundred twenty megapixel single camera and 4K video recording at one hundred twenty frames per second, along with 8K playback at sixty frames per second.
The chipset is powered by the Hexagon NPU, which Qualcomm says delivers a forty six percent boost in AI tasks and supports multimodal on device AI features. The Sensing Hub can activate the assistant through simple motion detection, including lifting the device.
Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will first appear in devices from OnePlus, starting with the OnePlus Ace 15R. Upcoming devices from brands such as iQOO, Motorola and Vivo are also expected to use the new chipset soon.
