Chrome tests new approximate location feature for Android users

Google is testing a new location control feature for Chrome on Android smartphones. The company is working on an approximate location option that will allow websites to access a less accurate location instead of exact GPS coordinates. This feature aims to give users more control over the type of location data each website can access. It may also let users share precise location details only with selected websites.

According to a report, Chrome for Android version 142.0.7444.171 includes a new setting that allows users to share their approximate location with websites. Google appears to be testing this feature for some users, which means it may not be available on all devices yet. The updated permission prompt is expected to improve privacy by helping users decide which sites can track their location.

The new feature lets Chrome keep precise location access at the app level. At the same time, users can choose to share only an approximate location with individual websites. Sites that need general location information will no longer receive exact GPS details. However, sites that need precise information for tasks such as navigation can still request it.

Users can try enabling the feature early by typing chrome colon slash slash flags in the Chrome address bar. They can then scroll through the experimental settings until they see the Approximate Geolocation Permission option. After choosing the Enable prompt arm horizontal with icon and description option, selecting approximate location will limit websites to viewing only the user’s general area.

Meanwhile, Chrome is getting a visual update starting with version 141. The server side rollout is now available on more devices. The design changes follow Google’s Material three expressive style, which includes an updated three dot menu and a redesigned bookmark icon.
