A major customer information breach involving a former vendor has led to a significant penalty for Comcast. The Federal Communications Commission announced that the company will pay a fine after personal details belonging to a large group of current and past subscribers were exposed.
According to the regulator, the issue stemmed from Financial Business and Consumer Solutions, a debt collection vendor that worked with Comcast until 2022. The vendor suffered a data breach in 2024 that revealed information linked to customers using Comcast internet, television and home security services. The FCC also noted that FBCS had filed for bankruptcy before the breach became public in August 2024, raising further concerns about how the data was handled.
As part of a settlement with the FCC, Comcast will pay a penalty of 1.5 million US dollars and follow a compliance plan that introduces new oversight measures for third party vendors managing customer information. The agreement aims to strengthen privacy and protection practices across the company’s partnerships.
Comcast said in a statement that it was not responsible for the incident and has not conceded any wrongdoing. The company added that none of its internal systems were compromised and stated that FBCS had been required to follow its security standards. Comcast said it remains committed to improving its cybersecurity policies to safeguard customer data.
