Major US banks may have been affected in cyberattack on technology vendor

Information linked to clients of several major US banks may have been accessed in a cyberattack on a technology service provider, according to a report citing people familiar with the matter. The institutions potentially impacted include JPMorgan Chase, Citi and Morgan Stanley.

The attack targeted SitusAMC, a New York based vendor that supports real estate lenders. In a statement published on its website, the company confirmed that it experienced a cyber incident on November 12. It said certain data from its systems had been compromised and that “data relating to some of our clients’ customers may also have been impacted.” The company did not reveal the names of any affected clients.

Requests for comment sent to the banks were not answered. SitusAMC said the exposed information included corporate material related to business activities handled through the company. This included items such as accounting records and legal agreements. Michael Franco, chief executive of SitusAMC, said the company is continuing to review any possibly affected data and has notified law enforcement.

FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement that “While we are working closely with affected organizations and our partners to understand the extent of potential impact, we have identified no operational impact to banking services.” Attempts to reach the FBI for further comment were not successful.

SitusAMC stated that the bank incident has been contained and all services are operating normally. It added that the attack did not involve any encrypting malware.
